Icon Urban Tank Bag Review
How many times have you felt like a dork having to carry around your helmet when at the store, the movie theater, or just plain walking around? Have you ever wanted to bring some food to your friends barbecue's only to be denied due to lack of luggage space?
The Urban tank bag by Icon is a practical, stylish and overall excellent way for you to store both your gear and helmet. Catering to their target market, Icon has given street and sport bike riders a convenient way to store luggage that only touring and cruiser riders have been able to enjoy at a reasonable level.
style
The urban tank bag will make any walk down the street impressionable. Like most of Icon's gear, it comes in a variety of bright color schemes: yellow, blue, red, pink, and grey. Embroidered on either side of the bag is Icon's famous logo. On the backside of the pack, although it will probably be rarely seen, a simple but futuristic pattern add's a nice touch to the overall style of the pack (another example of how Icon goes above and beyond).
features
The bag can be used as either a tank bag, backpack, or backpack with helmet storage.
As a tank bag, the pack mounts onto the gas tank and grips the four corners with four high powered magnetic flaps. The neoprene flap that is also used to hold your helmet in place when used as a backpack has a dual purpose of covering the bottom of the pack ensuring your tank will not get scratched.
When the pack is mounted on your tank you will notice there is a clear medium zippered compartment where you can put a map or directions in for easy viewing.
Turning the pack into a simple backpack requires the helmet straps to be tucked into the top of the pack and the magnetic flaps to each be tucked underneath a slit in the back of the pack for each flap. The backpack straps are removed from a zipper compartment in the top of pack.
A helmet can be stored at the bottom of the pack using a neoprene flap that grips and covers one side of the helmet and is then secured by two adjustable straps with plastic clips that clip into the bottom of the pack. We would have liked to see better quality clips on the helmet strap, however, it does the job. Make sure to pull the straps tightly to secure your helmet.
The pack has several compartments: a main compartment, a medium sized compartment for storing easy access items, two side pockets, and a CD/MP3 compartment with cord grommet.
safety
The four magnets are very strong and hold the pack securly in place even when riding at high speeds.
As mentioned in the features section, we would have liked to see a more durable clip, such as metal instead of plastic, for the helmet straps.
quality
The pack is made from a Water resistant 420 denier ripstop material and will keep your cargo dry and will not tear or rip easily.
The neoprene flap used to protect the gas tank as well when carrying your helmet is a grippy, smooth material that is sure to impress.
show me the money
The pack is a bit on the expensive side for a tank bag - ringing in at USD $110 suggested retail value. However, Icon is quite adamant about having their retailers sell at or below the suggested value. Although a bit pricey you do get what you pay for.
